Playlet
This research note is kept separate from the app profile so the main page stays focused on ranking data.
One-line positioning
Playlet is a vertical micro-drama platform under the MicroShowtime group founded by Jian Zhou, the former CEO of Joyy's entertainment division, and is listed under the Hong Kong entity MicroShowtime Limited. It focuses on self-produced female-oriented dramas (strong female leads, CEO romance, love-and-revenge, workplace rom-coms) and monetizes through a paid model of free preview episodes plus virtual-coin unlocks and membership subscriptions, with the United States as its core market. Launched in early 2024, it reached No.14 on the US iOS Entertainment grossing chart within two months, making it one of the fastest-rising overseas short-drama apps.
Product & company
Store listings and the user agreement identify MicroShowtime Limited as the overseas operating entity of Playlet (iOS seller and Android developer, both using package id com.shortvideo.playlet). The official website lists MicroShowtime Limited as the Hong Kong-based parent company of Playlet and discloses Guangzhou Qingying Network Technology Co., Ltd. as its China office and an office in El Monte, California. Corporate registry records show that Guangzhou Qingying Network Technology Co., Ltd. (USCC 91440106MAD5G6F39N, legal representative Li Xiaoyao, established 2023) is a wholly foreign-owned enterprise whose sole shareholder is the Singapore entity MICRO SHOWTIME PTE. LTD. (100%). Multiple public media reports and brand records link Playlet to founder Jian Zhou (former CEO of Joyy's entertainment business and head of YY Games/Huya Live), stating that she founded Micro Showtime with overseas investment in 2023 and then launched Playlet. Industry media (YFChuhai) describe the group's holding company as located in Singapore with MicroShowtime Limited as the group's dedicated Hong Kong short-drama entity. The direct equity filing between MicroShowtime Limited (HK) and the Singapore holding entity has not yet been separately verified, but the core attribution - Hong Kong operation, Guangzhou domestic entity and Singapore holding layer - is corroborated by store records, the user agreement, the official website and registry data, so confidence is rated high.
Business model & format
Playlet centers on one-to-two-minute vertical live-action short dramas across female-oriented tropes such as strong female leads, billionaire romance, love-and-revenge, contract marriage, workplace rom-coms, werewolf, revenge and suspense. The opening episodes are free to sample, while later ones are unlocked via virtual-coin purchases and auto-renewing membership subscriptions; the App Store lists in-app purchases and Google Play data indicate in-app ads in some regions. Core revenue comes from C-end payment: early 2024 data shows iOS in-app purchases accounted for roughly 77% of iOS revenue, US users contributed as much as 96% of in-app purchase revenue, and US daily revenue was about 55 times that of the then second-largest market, the UK - a typical paid short-drama product.
Growth & market
Playlet went live on stores in December 2023 (public reports date its formal launch to January 2024). In March 2024 it reached No.14 on the US iOS Entertainment grossing chart and top-5 category monthly revenue, surpassing USD 2.4M in combined revenue across both stores within its first three months, with a single-day peak above USD 200K. In July 2025 (DataEye/The Paper), one hit title drove daily downloads to a peak of about 38K (+754%) and daily revenue from USD 18K to 234K (+1228.7%), with weekly ad-creative volume at 6,637 (+118.4%) concentrated on Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Audience and Messenger. It entered the US market revenue top-9 in Q3 2025 (about 60% of revenue from the US) and made the Sensor Tower overseas short-drama revenue chart for full-year 2025; by mid-2026 cumulative downloads exceeded 6.4M (AppBrain) with about 540K in the last 30 days, ranking top-25 in entertainment in Japan and Indonesia.
Risks & watchpoints
Playlet has strong supporting evidence (store listings, user agreement, official website and registry records) and is suitable for public listing. Points to note: first, the direct equity filing between MicroShowtime Limited (HK) and the Singapore holding entity MICRO SHOWTIME PTE. LTD. has not been separately verified, and the industry-media claim that Guangzhou Qingying is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hong Kong company differs from the registry shareholder record (the direct shareholder is the Singapore entity) - HK/SG registry filings are recommended to complete the group picture; second, the registered capital of Guangzhou Qingying is shown as RMB 2M (Aiqicha/Qixin) versus RMB 0.76M (YFChuhai); third, a domestic Chinese app also named 'Playlet' exists (developer Shaanxi Jiaqi Network Technology), so listings should clearly reference the MicroShowtime Limited version; fourth, growth relies heavily on single hit titles and paid buying (the July 2025 case showed daily revenue scaling more than tenfold within days), so revenue volatility should be watched; fifth, the strong-conflict storylines carry content-moderation and takedown risk across markets.
